Co-curricular subjects at the Academy are offered as core, elective and co-curricular subjects. Our programs and activities support and extend the learning and social interests of all Academy girls. Students from across the College are encouraged to participate in the Academy’s co-curricular offerings.
Performing Arts at the Academy provides students with a space where they can freely express themselves and develop self-confidence and creativity. The three key areas at our College are Music, Dance, and Drama. These programs are both part of what we offer, and Tutored Programs.
Our extensive instrumental and vocal offerings increasingly focus on the benefits musicality has on neurological development, particularly for your daughter’s language and mathematical skills. We encourage our students to see new horizons, and in doing so they understand different parts of the world through the cultural medium of music.
We have a number of music programs and initiatives, such as an ensemble of about 25 students playing brass, woodwind, string, and percussion, the Academy Choir, who perform at various College events and AMICCI, our chamber choir.
Drama at the Academy forms part of the core curricula and electives. Students who wish to pursue Drama can also participate in the College production.
The College production is an opportunity for students to sing, dance, and act in a musical. It also provides those who are interested in production itself with set design, stage management, costume design, and choreography skills.
Similarly, Dance at the Academy forms part of the core curricula and electives. Students passionate about dance can become part of the Dance Team.
The Dance Team is a small, auditioned team open to students from Year 7–12. The Dance Team gives students the opportunity to experience and explore different dance styles as choreographed by the Dance Captain. The Dance Team’s performance opportunities include the Performing Arts Night, College productions, and assemblies.
Participation in the Academy’s various Sport programs builds students’ skills in teamwork, diligence, self-care, and mutual respect for others. Sport at the Academy helps your daughter understand wellbeing and development across her lifespan, and can also contribute to her current or future studies in Sport Science, Health, and Human Development. Students can play both team and individual sports, and have the opportunity to compete from participation to an elite level in some disciplines.
When your daughter joins the Academy community, she’ll also become a member of one of four Houses. Our House Sport system includes annual carnivals for both Swimming and Athletics, respectively, which give students equal opportunity and ability to participate competitively in team and individual sports.
Visual Arts at the Academy allow students to express their visual artistic talents through digital and traditional art practices, such as, design, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, printmaking, fashion design and photography.
We enhance our students’ appreciation of art in both a social and cultural context by developing how they express and discuss opinions about art. Many of these conversations take place within some of Melbourne’s premier art and culture centres. Our Visual Arts program also includes the annual Visual Arts Exhibition, the Art Academy team, visiting artists and enrichment programs.
Social justice at the Academy raises our students’ awareness of the structures that can organise and disrupt the way people across the globe experience daily life. By becoming informed citizens, our girls can become active citizens, which is why our social justice program includes many opportunities for students to take action at a local and global level.
Academy girls work to raise awareness of issues like poverty and homelessness, and to support the work of agencies like Caritas and McAuley Community Services for Women. Co-curricular and extra-curricular social justice activities like these focus on giving students a platform to practice their social enterprise skills within the communities they belong to.
Academy girls have the opportunity to develop their intercultural understanding with experiential travel to our sister schools in Italy and Japan, and study tours to France. Educational travel opens students respect for and understanding of different perspectives by connecting what they’ve studied at home with the parts of the world they’ve been learning about.
What better way to perfect another language than to travel to the country where it is spoken and interact with the people who live there. The Academy offers language subjects in Italian, Japanese, and French through to VCE level. Our sister school exchanges allow Academy girls to connect with students from Italy, Japan, and France in an experience that deepens their understanding of these different cultures and the people who come from them.
Student-led Clubs at the Academy are both initiated and run by the students themselves, with support from relevant staff members. The Clubs encourage diverse hobbies and interests from the sciences to the Arts and environment. All are creative in their approach and explore leadership and participation.
- Reptile Keeping – students from across our community care for four reptile residents in the Biology laboratory, learning about reptile life cycles, habitat, and conservation along the way.
- Mathematics Committee – a group of Year 10 students work together to organise and run activities for primary schools, the Year 7 ‘Mathematics Pentathlon’, and Pi Day.
- Open Studio Art Club – a lunchtime club for all students to use the Art room facilities to work on individual or group projects
