Identity through Art at the NGV

Our Year 10 Painting class headed into the NGV at Federation Square on Thursday 3 May. Their focus was to take a discerning look at the role that artists have played in constructing our national identity. Taking our cue from Art Historian and Comedian, Hannah Gadsby, the students were encouraged to look critically at paintings from significant stages of our history and ask themselves the following:

  • Who or what is being depicted?
  • Who or what is being ignored?
  • What aspect of identity is being emphasised?

This project will culminate in a comparative written analysis of the two works that each student chooses.
