Enrichment Programs
Enrichment in Mathematics occurs formally within the curriculumn and informally via extra competitions, challenges and clubs.
Formally:
Year 7 and 8 Extension Work
Students who complete the set work and are interested in extending their Mathematical skills are encouraged to complete extension work teachers prepare. This work ranges from text exercises, worksheets, challenges and projects.
Year 9 and 10 Advanced Mathematics
In Semester 2 of Year 9 and in Year 10 strong Maths students are encouraged to elect Advanced Mathematics. This enables them to study more challenging work and be assessed on more appropriate assessment tasks.
Maths Magnified
In Year 9 and 10 highly motivated and competent Maths students can elect to study this Middle School elective for one semester. Students selecting this unit can expect to do mathematics that is different, that is challenging and that will require considerable ability and hard work.
Informally:
Year 10 Mathematics Committee
Students from Year 10 are invited to join this committee and work in a team planning and running the Maths Project that occur throughout the year. The committee host the Primary School Maths Day, a Year 7 and Year 8 event and develop and coordinate Maths Challenges throughout the year.
Australian Mathematics Competition
An annual worldwide calculator free Mathematical Competition asking questions from a range of mathematical content areas.
Academy Junior Mathematical Challenges
Throughout the year the Yr 10 Mathematics Committee run Challenges for different year levels. These are advertised on the intranet and through the Daily Bulletin.
Maths Games Days
A number of surrounding schools run Games Days that students are asked to attend. This is a good opportunity to develop team work in a competitive environment.
Melbourne University Engineering Endeavour Day and Maths Challenge
Year 10 and Year 11 students attend a variety of exhibit and competition days hosted by different Melbourne University faculties.
Special Events
Year 7 World of Mathematics
Year 7 Measurement in Sport Project Day
A joint project with the Health and Physical Education Department, where students measure their fitness, agility and strength. These results are collated and form the basis for mathematical and health investigations in class. This day is run by the Year 10 Mathematics Committee with the student Sport Leaders.
Year 8 Pentathlon Project Day
Year 8's are placed in groups then spend the day competing against each other in five events. The events focus on different maths content, problem solving, model construction and strategy games. This day is run by the Year 10 Mathematics Committee.
Year 9 Core Week Activities
Focus is on Geometry. Students examine the geometric shapes in the city architecture of St Paul's cathedral, the Town Hall and Federation Square and the geometry of art works in the National Gallery of Victoria.
