Maths - Department Overview

Overview

Mathematics is an area of learning and knowledge older than recorded history and has, through the ages, developed into a sophisticated, complex body of knowledge. Mathematics pervades all aspects of our lives, at home, as citizens and in the workplace. It has applications in all human activities, crossing cultural and linguistic boundaries to provide a universal way of solving problems in areas such as science and engineering, business and finance, technology, arts and crafts and many every-day activities.

The study of mathematics enables students to acquire the mathematical knowledge, ways of thinking and confidence to use mathematics to:

  • conduct everyday affairs eg. monetary exchange, planning and organising events and measuring;

  • make informed decisions at a personal, community and vocational level;

  • engage in the mathematical studies needed for further education and employment.

All mathematical units involve practical activities, problem solving, investigations and skills exercises designed to enhance the students' understanding of concepts and develop skills in the following areas of study: Space; Number; Measurement: Chance and Data: Algebra; and Reasoning Strategies. As a result of completing these tasks, students should:

  • realise that mathematics is relevant to them;

  • gain an appreciation of the development and power of mathematics

  • realise that mathematics involves the observation, representation and application of patterns.
