Health and Physical Education
Health and Physical Education provides students with the opportunity to explore concepts of personal fitness such as flexibility, strength and force through activity. Participation in specific drills and games develop motor skills while working co-operatively with others. Students learn to use sport equipment correctly, discuss aspects of safety and rules of both minor and major games. Through the participation in health class, students will be able to acknowledge and record concepts on nutrition, safety, fitness and human development. Students will explore usages of healthy people and develop their own health goals. Students will also develop the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions, plan strategies and implement and evaluate actions that promote growth and development, participation in physical activity, fitness, effective relationships and the safety and health of individuals and groups.
Year 8
Health and Physical Education
Health and Physical Education provides students with the opportunity to work in groups, to plan strategies, practise drills and create movement sequences. Skill development remains the primary focus of all practical units, with team strategies and tactics being introduced and further explored as units progress. Students assess skill performances through movement analysis activities; ultimately developing their ability to identify and execute correct technique. Health provides students with the opportunity to examine body systems and their functioning and to explore basic first aid practices. The consequences of engaging in risk taking behaviours are also investigated throughout the course; while strategies to promote informed decision making are also taught. The various relationships developed across the lifespan and the subsequent impact on health and development is explored. The responsibilities and reasons for change within relationships are also studied along with a range of approaches to conflict resolution.
Year 8 Home Economics
This unit of work focuses on the Family through the areas of kitchen management, food and nutrition, human development, food preparation and health. These in turn can influence attitudes, beliefs and values which support health enhancing behavior. The areas of study explore: safety within the kitchen, motivation to make healthy food choices, skill and confidence in healthy food preparation, problems which can influence healthy food choices, multicultural diets and adolescence.

Year 9 Physical Education
Movement and Physical Activity
The promotion of physical activity and the development of movement competence is a primary concern in any physical education program. Semester one provides the students with the opportunity to explore the relationship between fitness, health and improved performance. They also examine ways of improving motor skill performance through analysis of personal skill level and movement strengths.
Students develop an understanding of total fitness with regard to muscular strength, flexibility, endurance and the body"s response to exercise. They investigate and evaluate their own personal health profile and implement strategies for improving performance.
Semester two focuses on the further development of practical skills in a range of popular Australian and international sports. Technique, rule adherence, the ethics of fair play and game tactics are examined and discussed.
Year 10 Health and Physical Education
Semester One - "Outside The Gym"
Overcrowded gyms, increased leisure time and the rise of a multicultural
society have contributed to a new breed of 'Fitness Fanatics'. People
are turning to alternative leisure pursuits outside the gymnasium to
meet their recreational needs. The influence of eastern culture has seen
a need to educate western civilization of a form of recreation that is
beneficial both physically and mentally, yet not confined to the gym. "Outside
the Gym" introduces students to a variety of physically and mentally
stimulating activities that require little time, space or organization
yet can be beneficial for some as a year long weights program. Practical
activities include Tai Chi, Bocce, Badminton and Self-Defence
Semester Two - "Training The Athlete"
Knowledge of physical fitness requires a basic understanding of the
structure and function of the Human Body. Through this understanding,
the ability to prescribe exercises that are both safe and specific for
muscles and joints can be developed as well as an appreciation of the
physical limitations of the human body. This unit aims to develop an
understanding of the function of the Human Body with regard to exercise.
Students will investigate a number of areas used in the prescription
of exercise including the principles of training and exercise programming,
movement mechanics incorporating potentially dangerous exercises and
injury recognition and prevention. The varying importance of different
fitness components between activities is further examined.
Middle School Elective Program
Health Science
HP01: Making A Healthier You
This study is designed to enable students to develop and increase their knowledge and understanding of health from a personal and community perspective. Students continue their study of the changes associated with adolescence. In developing strategies to minimize harm and protect their own and others" health, students consider health resources, products and services, and the influences of law, public health programs, their conscience, community attitudes, and religious beliefs. They begin to clarify a cohesive set of personal values and how they could be used to improve their health.
HP02: No Time To Play
Australians should value leisure time. This semester unit examines the
factors which affect people's performance and participation in both recreational
and sporting activities. It also aims to develop the students understanding
of the range and accessibility of resources that encourage the effective
use of leisure time and promote healthy lifestyle choices. Students investigate
and analyze the personal and lifestyle implications of increased leisure
time in today's society. They evaluate and plan strategies to cope with
the demands of the modern world. Through participation in a range of
recreational activities they consider the health and leisure needs of
particular groups in our population and investigate strategies to meet
those needs.
HP03: The Diet Dilemma
The units of work studied at this level focus on the use of food models
to plan a balanced diet suited to individual and family needs. The study
explores: The different types of diets required by individuals with specific
needs, The Vegetarian Diet, The Sports Diet, The Weight loss diet and
The Low Fat Diet. The role of nutrients in the human body is investigated
as well as health problems related to over nutrition or under nutrition.
The impact of the media on food selection and body image is examined.
VCE
Physical Education
Unit 1: Learning and Improving Skill
Unit one looks at a range of factors that influence learning and improving physical skills and the role of the coach in making this happen. By studying various sports, specific psychological concepts and the effects these can have on performance, students apply physiological principles to the sporting arena. The biomechanical principles of movement are approached from the perspective of improving physical performance.
Unit 2: The Active Body
Unit two introduces the students to an understanding of physical activity, including the relationships between body systems and physical activity, the place of physical activity in contributing to well being in students" own lives as well as in the wider community, and the classification of physical activity in terms of type and experience.
Unit 3: Physiological and Participatory Perspectives of Physical Activity
This unit introduces students to an understanding of physical activity from a physiological perspective. It explores the contribution of the energy systems to physical performance as well as the health benefits of regular physical activity.
Unit 4: Enhancing Physical Performance
Improvements in physical performance, in particular fitness, depend on the ability of the individual or coach to acquire, apply and evaluate knowledge and understanding about training. Through experiencing a variety of practical activities involving a range of training methods and fitness activities, students learn to accurately assess the particular energy and fitness needs of the sport by analyzing collected data.
Health and Human Development
Unit 1 - Youth Health and Development
This unit provides an opportunity for students to explore the physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes that occur and the inherited and environmental factors that influence health and development. Students will also identify a range of challenges, and have the opportunity to investigate one challenge in detail and justify recommendations for action that could optimise the health and development of youth.
Unit 2- Individual and Community Health and Development
In this unit, students explore the requirements for optimal health and development throughout childhood and adulthood, and investigate inequitable health and developmental outcomes that can occur as a result of social and environmental factors. Students will also examine the organization and delivery of health care in Australia and critically evaluate its effectiveness in promoting health and development for all Australians.
Unit 3 - Nutrition, Health and Development
In this area of study students will develop an understanding of the health status of Australians by investigating the burden of disease, researching the health of population groups in Australia and accounting for inequities in health status. Students will explore the determinants of health with particular emphasis on nutrition and food intake and explain the role of nutrition in public health. Students also consider the changes in public health that have occurred as a result of changes in understanding about health and in health needs over time. Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of governments in addressing health needs and promoting health for all.
Unit 4 - Global health and Development
This unit focuses on the developmental changes that occur as individuals move through the lifespan as well as an exploration of inherited factors that determine developmental potential. There is an analysis of the impact of a range of environmental factors that contribute to variations in health and developmental outcomes both between and within industrialized and developing countries. This global comparison will enable students to evaluate the determinants of optimal health and development and the range of sustainable health care initiatives developed by governments and international agencies to optimize health and development globally.
